Give Input on Language Arts Materials

Highline Public Schools plans to adopt new materials for language arts--and we want your input! Your voice is important as we select new Language Arts instructional materials for kindergarten through 12th grade.

This past spring our language arts curriculum adoption committees reviewed many curricular tools and narrowed down the options to finalists. Explore videos, lessons and information on our curriculum page. Join us for Question & Answer Sessions to delve deeper into content and get answers to your questions. Links are below.

Your feedback will inform the committee’s recommendation to the school board in February. Materials will be introduced in the 2021-22 school year.

Elementary Language Arts

Elementary materials up for review include ReadyGen and American Reading Company. Materials both are available in Spanish and English and support dual language programming.

About the Process

In September 2019, we announced a kindergarten through 12th grade Language Arts adoption process. See the timeline (planned and adjusted) and committee membership on our Instructional Materials webpage.

We want students to have an equally rigorous experience no matter which school they attend or what teacher they have. Educators sometimes refer to this as a “guaranteed and viable curriculum.”

New materials ensure students have the highest quality instructional materials, regardless of whether students are engaged in distance, hybrid or in-person learning. With the recent passage of our technology levy, we have an opportunity to support our students with a new curriculum that can also be enhanced with technology.

During school closures we have continued to involve stakeholders in the adoption process. We have confidence in the authenticity of the process, which includes teacher collaboration, teacher professional development and ongoing feedback from school staff and community members.

Although we must continue the adoption process in a virtual format due to the pandemic, we are confident this is not a reason to delay the process. A delay would result in a significant loss for our students and would be a disservice to teachers who have expressed an ongoing need for language arts materials before and during Distance Learning.
